WHY I KEEP PIGEONS

by DANIEL MACCHIA on 07/03/11

When I was a boy my father had pigeons on a six story building on the upper east side in Manhattan. He did race homers but it was his flights. that caught my attention there was nothing more that I wanted to do then to catch strays. I would just wear those flights out chasing them in a effort to catch someone's birds. As time went by things changed we had No TV I was common for us to sit on the steps to the building listening to the Brooklyn Dodgers play the New York Giants. Today we have the Internet cell phones and can play games at anytime. I have more choices today then ever before. So just what is it that keeps me keeping and racing pigeons. I have to deal with hawks clean my loft and feed and water them each and everyday. Surely it not the adversity I must deal with and lord knows that is plenty of that. So just what is it?

When I go into my loft I find it is a interlude from life. All my worries and concerns soon disappear. The cooing and hand feeding soon bring me to state of tranquility. I look at the birds and wonder who will be a winner.
But even more than ever before I have found new life in keeping my birds.  My grandson has taken an interest we feed the birds together and I no longer have Red Checkers some are brownie, or brownie's brother. It took me all these years to truly understand why my father let me chase the hell out of those flights.

Pigeons do much more then bring me pleasure looking at then They are not only helping me get over the setbacks of life They are helping me bond with my grandson.

I wonder what is that keeps you keeping pigeons go here to let me know

Flying Over Mountains

by DANIEL MACCHIA on 06/28/11

Flying over mountains has always been a subject with  many different options
Some feel that the losses would be high others feel that the birds can handle it.

Feel free to post your thoughts it should make an interesting topic.
